In start of October, a powered wheelchair that moves when user thinks on particular word, was demonstrated by American company Ambient. The electric wheelchair operates by catching the signals sent from user’s brain to their larynx (voice box), even when there is no audiable sound. Wheelchair was developed to help people with spinal injuries, or neurological problems like cerebral palsy or motor neurone disease. This revolutionary brain interface allows user to operate computer and other equipment despite serious problems with muscle control. Similar to autonomous remote controlled electric wheelchair we already wrote about, this system allows user even more freedom, as all user has to do is think of the word. System consists of larynx (voice box), which user must be able to operate - and most likely can, even in the event of poor muscle coordination necessary to produce coherent speech.
This breakthrough voice boy system called larynx control system, or shortly “Audeo”, was developed by researchers Michael Callahan and Thomas Coleman at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US, who together also founded Ambient.
High hopes on restoring speech
The system works via a sensor-laden neckband which eavesdrops on electrical impulses sent to larynx muscles. It then relays the signals through an secured wireless link, to a computer. The computer decodes signals and compares them to a series of prerecorded “commands” setup during initialization. These “commands” can then be used to mind direct an electric motorised wheelchair. Developers say this works reliably even through the skin, which makes it hard to record signals. Currently more than three companies are persuing “mind control” devices, allowing disabled to enjoy full life. We have seen some implants, put directly on brain itself, but Audeo is by far the only one which showed great results with pure external sensors.
Next generation of possibilities
Developers also showcased automatic mind controlled speech synthesis, allowing a paralysed person to “speak” out loud. Other competitors in area of mind controlled assistive technology that concentrate on measuring brain waves or even ones using an electrode cap or implants placed directly in the brain, were so far unable to reproduce either single words or continuous speech. But Audeo in combination with recent refinements to the algorithms used in speech processing may make it possible to interpret whole sentences thought out by the user. This could potentially restore near-normal speech to people who have not spoken for years, the researchers say. Combined with high tech electric wheelchair batteries, this would allow disabled people to gain much higher independance…
Audeo makers insist, that reading information directly from the brain is the only possible way to help people with severe spinal injuries. Because some patients are not even able to send nerve signals to the muscles in their face, and interfacing with the brain is the only way there.
Advantege of Audeo is that it is very portable, not cumbersome to set-up, and the ease of use. It is interesting, that NASA produced a similar system in 2004. It could recognize a handful of short words and numbers, and the individual letters of the alphabet. The agency hopes to eventually integrate the technology into spacesuits.
Thinking of words is all required to drive this electric wheelchair, say scientists at Ambient

The following extract is from a series of alternative energy articles, tips and information on the uses of sun energy …
As people learn more about the need to conserve energy, many of us are opting to install a solar power system in the home. The solar powered household consumes less electricity and is verymost environmentally friendly. However, many people are worried about the costs involved. In this excerpt, we’ll tell you how installing solar panels in your home can actually be an investment that will save you thousands of dollars in the future.
Photovoltaic means electricity from light. This solar power system uses the light of day to power ordinary electrical equipment like household appliances, computers and lighting. Having your own solar photovoltaic (PV) system means that you can generate your own electricity from the free and inexhaustible sun power. A photovoltaic system never needs refueling, emits no pollution and can be expected to operate for twenty to twenty-five years with minimal maintenance needed. A typical PV system on a home roof can prevent over 34 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions during its lifetime.
The electrical output of a PV cell depends on the intensity of the light to which it is exposed. Therefore, PV cells usually generate more electricity on bright days than when skies are grey. This doesn’t mean that your solar system will not work when skies are grey. Over the last few years, PV technology has also begun to be introduced into urban areas, incorporated into the roofs and facades of houses, offices and factories.
There are a few ways to determine what size a solar powered system for your home or business should be. You can install as many solar energy modules as will fit on your roof. This will increase the solar power generating capacity to completely eliminate your electricity bill. At first, installing more solar energy panels increases the overall value of the system. However, installing more modules beyond a certain limit ceases to be cost effective. It is necessary to do a careful solar site survey using a Solar Pathfinder to determine the net energy output of partially shaded modules and then decide if it is economically beneficial to install modules in those locations.
A solar power system can save you money, but the real benefit is in the reduction of greenhouse gases. Solar power is a rapidly advancing technology and many governments offer incentives to homeowners who take steps to make their home environmentally friendly. You can put money back in your pocket while saving the planet for future generations.

“LED” stands for ‘Light Emitting Diode.” But this is no good, of course, unless you know what a diode is, and how it emits light. First, a little history.
LEDs were invented in the early twentieth century by a Russian scientist named Oleg Vladimirovich Losev. His research, though, was ignored. Later, in the latter twentieth century, Nick Holonyak Jr. (now the father of the LED) developed the first practical LED in a visible spectrum. From that moment on, research continued to the present day, and here we are with the modern LED.
How does an LED work? A good question. The first question we must answer is: “What is a diode?” A diode is a simple device used as a sort of electronic control valve; the electric current going through them in one direction, but not the opposite. Simplified a little, when electrons through a light emitting diode, they lose energy. The excess energy is released in the form of photon beams, which for our purposes we can call light.
What is the difference between LEDs and your normal incandescent bulb? Incandescent light-bulbs use a filament. When an electrical current runs through the filament, the resistance builds up energy and heat which produce light. The different ways in which these two technologies create light make for some interesting characteristic differences between LEDs and incandescent light-bulbs.
LEDs, because they do not have to deal with a fragile filament, have a life-expectancy of roughly 10,000 hours to about 45,000 hours. Light-bulbs, on the other hand, have a life-expectancy of around 750 hours to 1000 hours–a significant difference. As well as lasting much longer, LEDs are also much more durable, because they lack a think filament.
LEDs are also much more power-sufficient than light-bubls. LEDs output approximately 18-22 luminous efficacy per watt, while light-bulbs produce around 15 luminous efficacy per watt.
As technology advance, LEDs will probably begin to replace light-bulbs, slowly crowding incandescents to extinction.
One of the major industries that use LEDs is the flashlight market. More Flashlight information.
Have you ever wondered what exactly is up with Watch batteries? This informative report can give you an insight into everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Cell Phone Battery .
The wireless revolution, the prolific use of PDAs, MP3s, MP4s, Laptops, Cell Phones, Smartphones, DVD players, and other portable devices have increased the need for smart and high capacity portable batteries.
Portable batteries however are not typical in design. Indeed the battery that powers your portable device is what is known as a smart battery and as such the internal system design of a smart battery is more complex then most people realize. Let’s look at what the internal design of your portable battery looks like!
To begin with high powered portable devices require an electrical current. There are two types of electrical current (direct current flow and alternating current flow). Direct current means that the flow of charge is in one direction. A battery produces direct current (DC) because there is no way to change the + and - you see on the battery.
In order to create direct electrical current electrons must be caused to break away from atoms to create an electron flow. Why?
The answer is because electricity is a property of certain subatomic particles (protons, electrons, and neutrons) which couples to electromagnetic fields and causes attractive and repulsive forces between them; by doing so an electrical flow is created, and this is where electricity comes from. Let’s explain!
Scientists have found ways to create large numbers of positive atoms and free negative electrons (in other words they have found ways to separate electrons from atoms). Since overpopulated proton (positive) atoms want electrons (negative) so they can be balanced, these positive atoms have a strong attraction for electrons.
The manufactured disequilibrium creates a state of continuous flow of electrons to atoms with an overpopulation of protons (positive atoms). When electrons move from one atom to another atom a current of electron flow (which is how we get electricity) is created.

With all the Apple iPhone news, there’s been little written about the first accessory Apple itself released for the device - a $129 Bluetooth headset.
Let me give you a short review if you’re thinking about getting this for your iPhone… or, for that matter, any other mobile phone you may use. My hope is this News about the Apple iPhone will let you make a wise buying choice.
There’s a lot I like about the iPhone Bluetooth headset. It has a minimalist look, it is styled in black about the width of a pencil with an earpiece molded in at the top and a single, easy-to-operate switch that you push on to take calls or deactivate the headset.
And the sound quality is excellent. People talking to me have almost invariably remarked how clear and crisp I sound on it.
The problem with the iPhone headset I bought is its range. Apple advertises that it will work within a 30 foot radius of the iPhone, That is pretty much the standard range of most BlueTooth devices. But in my experience, instead of 30 feet, I get only about 3 feet. Seriously.
If I keep the iPhone in my pocket, and try to talk over the headset, there’s interference and breakup. I literally have to pick it up and hold it in my hand to get it to work. I have read in several other blogs around that this is not an unusual problem. Others have also complained about this. I plan to take this back to Apple and I hope that the issue is limited to just that one unit so I would suggest that if you get one, you try it out first.
Perhaps the neatest thing about this iPhone accessory is that it comes in a special cradle that charges both it and the iPhone. It also automatically pairs with the iPhone, meaning it’s instantly workable. And as a bonus, there’s even an audio jack in the back of the cradle that lets you hook the iPhone to an external speaker system.
Once charged, it lasts a long time, delivering up to 5.5 hours of talk time and up to 72 hours of standby time thanks to its built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
My bottom line assessment: It’s a tad overpriced but, assuming the range problem was just a glitch in the unit I bought, it’s a great accessory for the iPhone. Hope this Apple iPhone news helps.
